Flora Fresh today looks a lot different than it did when the company was established in 1984. Having grown up as part of a family of farmers in California, Allan Nishita knew he wanted to spend his career in agriculture. After graduating with a degree in Botany, Allan gained experience across California working for growers and wholesalers. In 1984 Allan along with Charmaine, who would later become his wife, started building arrangements in their garage in Greenhaven here in Sacramento.
What originally was a business supporting two end caps at local grocery stores turned into a network of well-known and independent stores throughout Northern California and Nevada. The wholesale business really took off when the market shifted in the 1990’s and Allan, along with family, started selling to florists in the region by going door to door with product samples. Today Flora Fresh has grown into the leading floral wholesaler in Northern California and Western Nevada. Providing a customer experience that is found in a small family run operation is what we do best and the reputation we have been built on.
Allan’s leadership in projects like “Spread the Beauty” and “Flowers for Frontliners”, a decision driven by having a daughter in nursing school during the pandemic, allowed the company to not only survive but thrive in new and unexpected ways. As he describes it, flowers bring a “piece of joy and happiness” which the team did by supporting growers and delivering flowers to frontliners at local hospitals. That dedication to customer service has only strengthened since May of 2021 when we became employee owned where, as a part of the Teamshares network of companies, every full-time employee is an owner of Flora Fresh. The decision to sell the business was a careful one and Allan recalls choosing Teamshares because there was no better way to thank the employees than by saying, “here’s your company”.
